note to self: next time, buy a bedding mix that is a different color than the hamsters.

see, the dwarf hammies will occasionally make a break for it. (where they think they're going is anyone's guess.) so i do a cage check every morning, pretty much. the animals, they are nocturnal (or diurnal, depending on tempermant.) which means: sleeping animal, less than 2 ounces, in large cage, blending in well with bedding material, add pet parent without caffeine and ridiculously short-sighted on a good day, and you have a lot of 'ohmigodwhereareyou?!' *rustlerustle* *hammie surfaces, cranky about being awakened, for which pet parent is sorry and sympathetic* *deep sigh of relief*.

did i mention that the exterminator was flummoxed by our situation? 'you mean you don't want the field mice, who carry germs and eat all your food, but you have pet mice and other rodents, that you don't want exposed to chemicals? whoa. dude.'

next time... buy CareFresh in a non-natural color, so hammies stand out.

y'know, sometimes a little humor is needed, just to lighten the day/week/long stretch of stress.

herewith, The 2006 Darwin Awards. my favorite? Hammer of Doom. and yes, i did laugh hard enough that i almost wasn't able to answer the phone at the office.
