on a musical note...

oh, fine, it's not that funny. but i'm a little punchy, so it amuses me. ;)

i have been thinking about music lately, tho. live music is one of the finest things for what ails you. and i'm lucky to not only live in a town with some of the finest homegrown going, but to know some of them, and to also work at two local venues.

right now, i'm listening to Jason Mraz (not live, unfortunately), thinking that he sounds a little bit like Josh Joplin at first blush, but very much like his own musician, and that you have to respect anyone who can rap over a banjo and make it sound *good*. he's coming to town in a few months, and i may try to see the show.

i wish i had made it to Toad this past Wednesday, because there was an article about The Family Jewels in the paper recently; turns out that i know the sax player, because he plays with Tim Gearan, whom i adore. also, The Family Jewels have deep and close ties to Hi n Dry Records, and by not very much extension, Morphine and the late, great Mark Sandman. so this is all good, and i should have gone to see them, right? well. they'll be gigging there for a month, and i'm worn out lately, so i figured i'd go next week.

only after i decided this did i find out that another fave band, the Ken Clark Organ Trio, would be taking the second set. hrmph. didn't get email from Ken until about 4 that day. The Dane said something later about why didn't i indulge my music jones, and i shot back 'i'm old. i plan.' sadly, this is more true than i'd like. i'd decided to do nothing that night, and that was the plan, and there was no changing it. and frankly, it's probably for the best. too much of a good thing, y'know? ;)

work last night was Chris Isaak. not that it was work, really. (well, except for the opening act. Lisa Marie. she was ragingly mediocre, not to mention unpleasant. does this mean my entreé to Graceland has been revoked?) the man is just about perfect - surfer, killer guitar, great voice, and really, nobody has the right to look that good in a powder blue, stretch nylon suit decorated with sequins. the man just about out-Elvised Elvis, you know what i mean? i actually said he was spangletastic, at one point. and when he came out in the disco ball suit? :)

work tonight is Elvis Costello, and the weather is lovely, and there should be boats on the water... ahhhh.

oh, and did i mention? Norah Jones is just about the cutest thing on the face of the earth. seriously. i worked her show a few weeks ago, and not only is she immensely talented, but incredibly funny and normal. she walked out on stage to introduce her opening act. just because. she also has a killer band (how many people can make a mandolin solo rock?), and was very funny between songs. just the cutest thing on earth, i'm telling you. :)

quick change of scenery - good for the soul, eh?

i'm way behind on things i want to write, further behind on pulling my life together, and generally feeling at sea these days. so... nothing makes that better than a new design, right?

being generally antsy, i'm sure i'll change it all around again in a few days. but for now, thinking about being in a small wooden hut, in the middle of nowhere, listening to waves lapping at the poles, does a body good.

the friday five:

1. Do you remember your first best friend? Who was it?

hm. lorraine, i think. she lived far enough away that my mom had to drive me over to her house - but when you're 5, it doesn't take much for that to be the case. lorraine had a bunch of surgery, and ended up in various sorts of body casts, as i remember. she still had plenty of energy to play, tho.

2. Are you still in touch with this person?

nope. she moved away when i was still pretty young, and it's not the first thing on your mind when you're 7 or 8 to keep in touch.

3. Do you have a current close friend?

yup. that would be Chica Beanie.

4. How did you become friends with this person?

oddly, i was just thinking about this recently. she and i worked at the same theatre, and she was one of the cool kids (we were both in our mid 20s at the time, so temper that as you will). and i decided that i wanted her to like me - shades of the sandbox on the playground, isn't it?

5. Is there a friend from your past that you wish you were still in contact with? Why?

i do rather wish that i were in touch with my best friend from high school; he and i did keep in touch for a while, and in fact even worked together for a few years. there was never any sort of falling out; i think that he and i just changed and moved along different paths. we both made sporadic efforts to keep in touch, but... you know how there are some people that you can run into after a few years, and it feels completely comfortable to pick up where you left off, in terms of chatter? he and i stopped being that for each other, i guess. so wishing to be in touch is a little vain, maybe. i guess i'm wishing more for a point in time than anything.

an excercise in punctuation:

Koalas Here Now
Koalas! Here & Now!
Koalas? Here. Now.
Koalas {Here} Now
Koalas...Here? Now.
Koalas = Here/Now

(silliness inspired by a recent conversation with peg and the signs that have appeared on the highway advertising the latest, albeit temporary, additions to the Stone Zoo.)
